Construction has begun on a new kindergarten to Grade 8 school in east Winnipeg that will welcome up to 800 students in the growing Devonshire Park community, Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt announced today.
“This is more than a new building, it’s a space where every child will feel they belong and where their potential is nurtured and recognized,” said Schmidt. “The school will be built to support their needs at every stage, and by bringing classrooms and child care together, we are making life easier for families.”
The new kindergarten to Grade 8 school will be located at 35 Private Davy Dr. and will have a core capacity of 800 students. The school will also include an integrated child-care centre with up to 134 spaces for infants, preschoolers and school-aged children, giving families access to education and care in the same building.
“Child-care spaces on school grounds will help children grow, help families and the wider community get ahead,” said federal Northern and Arctic Affairs Minister Rebecca Chartrand, minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency. “Families will have access to high-quality child care close to home and to their workplace, helping them save time and money.”
“River East Transcona School Division is excited to welcome a new school to the Devonshire area. Schools are the cornerstone of our communities, bringing families together and fostering connection, growth, and belonging,” said Colleen Carswell, trustee and board chair, River East Transcona School Division. “The board of trustees is grateful to the Manitoba government for recognizing the need for a new school that will accommodate an expanded student population of 800. This means that students currently being transported out of the neighbourhood, as well as others within the growing Devonshire community, will have the opportunity to learn close to home, discovering their talents, forming friendships and creating lasting memories in their own neighbourhood.”
The school is expected to begin welcoming students in September 2027, the minister noted.
This Devonshire Park school is one of 11 new schools announced in Budget 2025.
